THE POWER OF HOPE.
People are always throwing the hope word around, but it desperately needs to grow legs, otherwise the opposite may start to take over and the devastating cynical mind may move in.Nothing is quite as enriching to the spirit as movement in a focused, purposeful direction.
They say that hope springs eternal. It takes a certain belief to maintain that perspective. It is a perspective that needs to be understood, so that we may always step forward with a bright optimistic outlook.
With depression being the leading cause of disability worldwide and a major contributor to the global burden of disease(According to the World Health Organization) it is clear that hope is being extinguished for so many.
It may seem over simplistic, but it really is just a choice. I believe it is why some of the most truly remarkable men who ever lived made reference to the value of simplicity and were then able to live extraordinary lives.
“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”. (Leonardo Davinci)
Today’s society is easily caught up in complexity. Our patience has worn so thin that if it takes more than 5 seconds for our page to load on our computer screen, we get exasperated, if not completely lose it.
Like any other skill, trait or ability, applying the correct knowledge consistently can develop the attribute if we value it and commit to it’s attainment.
So here are 5 key principles to be sure that hope springs eternal.
1:- Having a bigger than self purpose or mission that you are inspired by.
In his award-winning book “Think and Grow Rich” Napoleon Hill referred to it as Definiteness of purpose.Time and time again, the power of the vision has seen people through great adversity.Victor frankl went through the horrors of the nazi death camps and wrote about this phenomenon in his award-winning book “Man’s Search for Meaning”.He watched on as most of his family were put to death in the gas chambers, but his harrowing experiences taught him some amazing insights into the power of the human spirit.
As a psychologist, he formulated the study of logotherapy, which is essentially the study of meaning and purpose. He was able to deduce that those with a strongly held purpose were far more likely to live through the death camps. He states that “ever more people today have the means to live, but no meaning to live for”.
2 :Always encourage the ferocious learner.
If we are constantly learning then we are green and growing instead of ripe and rotting. We are not confined, resigned or defined, but progressing inward. To encourage this ferocious learner, it is imperative that we find the subject matters and topics that inspire us to learn about. When we are at school, the learning is often imposed with an agenda to just get through the curriculum without consideration for the individual’s learning style, interest or pace , which often times leaves a bitter taste in our mouth.A taste that we may feel reluctant to want to participate in again. So we may be inclined to leave formal education with this idea that it is uninteresting, hard and unrewarding. This is extrinsic learning. The idea that we are motivated by the threat of punishment or the allure of a reward.
As we grow up and enter the big wide world outside of school and start to make more of our own choices, then we have the opportunity to branch out and find our own path. The path we desperately need to take is the one that is aligned with our voice. This is intrinsic learning.Being motivated by a sense of autonomy, self-mastery and purpose. These are the ultimate rewards.
“When the vision and voice on the inside is more profound, loud and clear than the opinions on the outside, then you have mastered your life”. (Dr John Demartini)
3.Making a positive contribution.
The acronym for hope could be Helping One Person Everyday.
Watch for a little inspiration. You were born with greatness within,
Don’t let the inner me become the enemy.
According to Sonya Lyubomirsky PH.D “people who engage in kind acts become happier over time. When you are kind to others, you feel good as a person, more moral, optimistic and positive”.
Researcher Stephen Post of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine serves as president of the Institute for Research on Unlimited Love, which conducts and funds research on altruism, compassion and service. His research shows that when we give of ourselves, especially if we start young, everything from life satisfaction to self-realization and physical health is significantly improved. Mortality is delayed, depression is reduced and well-being and good fortune are increased. From her post .How Random acts of Kindness Benefit your Health by Priya Advani. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/priya-advani/random-acts-of-kindness_b_3412718.html
Serotonin, which is the major constituent in anti- depressants, has been found to be released through perfoming an act of kindness. There is however a catch here. You need to feel engaged in this process.
I have participated in voluntary roles where i did not feel at all engaged or contributing.Finding a way to contribute where you feel a deep connection and involvement with the cause is imperative to your sense of contribution.Just doing something because of social expectations or following some sense of duty or obligation is not likely going to move the needle for you.
Giving of ourselves doesn’t need to viewed in such an altruistic way.Just doing what we do everyday, to the best of our ability, we likely make more of a contribution than we ever give ourselves credit for.Doing it cheerfully and with enthusiasm, will without a doubt infect those around you like a contagious cold.It becomes a matter of perception.Like any other habit, developing the habit of being enthusiastic in the little things will affect the big things.Specifically the way we feel and see ourselves.
4 .The law of Association.
Nothing has greater impact on us than our associations. Our craving for acceptance has us striving to fit into our environment. This is why it is imperative that we are vigilant with the company we keep.Surrounding ourselves with people who celebrate us instead of just tolerating us.
Finding those who are aligned with our goals and purpose to be the best version of ourselves instead of living in blame, excuse and deny. You need to get a sense of someone’s intentions to be able to determine whether they will help you or hinder you.If they tell you things with the intention to just bring you down and try to prop themselves up, then these do not qualify as the kind of company that will bring out the best in you.If however, they are open and honest with you with an intention to bring out the best in you, then maybe you want them on your team.
“You must constantly ask yourself these questions: Who am I around? What are they doing to me? What have they got me reading? What have they got me saying? Where do they have me going? What do they have me thinking? And most important, what do they have me becoming? Then ask yourself the big question: Is that okay?” — Jim Rohn
5:- Energy Flows Where Attention Goes.
“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause in wonder or stand wrapped in awe is as good as dead. His eye’s are closed.” (Albert Einstein)
All of the above aspects could fall under this umbrella.Being consciously aware of how you spend your time and what you are feeding your mind and your spirit will dictate whether you encourage an ever hopeful spirit or just feed your fears. The world will always cater to your fears . As we become constantly bombarded with media sensationalism and advertisers trying to sell us on the latest and greatest wiz bang gizmo that we apparently can’t do without, now more than ever before, we need to raise our awareness and stand guard at the gate to our mind.
Ensuring that we are true to our selves and what we value most will ensure that we invest our most precious resources in the best possible way.
Whilst the tough times come to all of us and can bring us down for a time, i am certain that for the person who would continually invest in these 5 principles, they will always be able to re- engage with an ever hopeful spirit that see’s everything on the way instead of in the way. They can lean on resources that develop a strength of character that enables them to rise above the challenges to be more than a conqueror with an indomitable spirit.
They have a team around them that will support them and bring them out of the storm as they are not lone wolves even though they develop personal autonomy and strong individual responsibility. These are deeply connected people because they have been investing into the best possible account. Other people’s lives. That comes with a guaranteed return on investment.A life well lived.
